How to Create an Unforgettable Proposal
PLANNING TO PROPOSE? HERE ARE MY 5 TIPS FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE PROPOSAL
Now that so many of us are feeling like we can finally start making plans again, a lot of couples are looking to ask their partner to marry them. It’s a moment many couples dream about and plan for – What ring should I get? How should I propose? Where should I propose? How can I make it a surprise?
There are so many questions to contemplate outside of the main one, “Will you marry me?” – And that’s what I want to talk about today.
Planning the Proposal
When it comes to the proposal, the most important thing is that you get to ask your special someone that special question. Everything outside of that is just extra! –And when it comes to those extras, I’m here to help! So let’s dive in. Here are my top 5 tips for creating an unforgettable proposal.
5 TIPS FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE PROPOSAL
Book a STAY at a fun location
Whether fun for you is backcountry campsite or luxury casita, there are so many incredible places to stay in Big Bend! I recommend being really intentional about your choice of stay since lodging plays such a huge role in the feel of an overall experience. Facetime your friends/family
If it's a destination proposal, it may not be feasible for your loved ones to be there to celebrate with you in person after you pop the question! Facetiming them after the proposal can be a good alternative and allow them to share in the excitement–no matter where they are!
Hire a photographer
The proposal is such an emotional moment, and hiring a photographer to document that moment will allow you to be fully present with each other. Plus, your photographer can often advise you on the best locations to propose and coach you through any logistical questions you may have.
Plan an engagement shoot for the next day or later down the road
Even if you hire a photographer to shoot the proposal, I recommend doing an engagement session the next day OR planning a session together with your wedding photographer.
In the heat of the moment, the last thing I want you to be worried about is makeup running from tears, outfits being perfect for a photo shoot, or the need to rush to the next location. I want you to be able to just enjoy the moment; You’re engaged—and that’s incredibly exciting all on its own! When hiring a photographer to capture your proposal, I recommend either hiring that same photographer for a day-after session where you can have some intentional time to get photographs and celebrate being newly engaged, and/or waiting to do an engagement session later once you’ve hired your wedding photographer.
I’m definitely biased and think it can be fun to do both proposal engagement photos and an engagement session later down the road, but you can pick whichever option works best for you!
DON’T BE AFRAID TO GET CREATIVE
When choosing the location and flow of your proposal, being intentional can take your proposal to the next level. Think about a detail to focus on—maybe it’s a plant you both love (like an ocotillo or century plant!) or maybe it’s an area of the park that holds significance to you. Whatever it may be, use that detail to anchor the proposal so that the whole experience is rooted in something that’s meaningful to your relationship.
If you’re planning on proposing in Big Bend National Park and it’s your first time visiting the area, then think more abstractly about what activities or feelings you connect with most as a couple. Maybe you both love adventure— then a sunrise proposal on the South Rim might be a great fit! Maybe you love being able to celebrate with your friends and family—reserve a few night’s stay at a local ranch and organize a destination engagement party so you can share in the excitement with your favorite people.
